Brief:

Build a website for science outreach, allowing the authors to easily change content. Site to include Latest News, Blog Posts, PDF Newsletters and a Members Area to share information with partners (~100 pages).

Solution:

The site is a WordPress site, with the theme built as a child theme of Twenty Twelve. Additional sidebars were added to allow control over the footer and section on the homepage. A sideshow was added to the homepage controlled via the Slideshow (slideshow jquery image gallery) plugin and image review is courtesy of the JetPack Carousel. The “Add To Any” plugin was used to inject social media sharing widgets into each page. Specific user access privileges are used so ‘authors’ can edit the blog Posts only ‘admins’ can edit the whole site.

The “Latest News” section was built using a custom post type and a custom Recent News widget was written based on the default “Recent Posts” widget. Similarly, the “PDF Newsletters” section was built using a custom post type, using the “Advanced Custom Fields” plugin to the additional information required, such as PDF file and date.

To keep things clean and avoid confusion, the members area was built as a 2nd site behind using the same them protected behind a htacess password. This keeps the members admin area completely separate and prevents hot linking files, which many of the members area plugins do not do.
